Abstract
Congenital malformation of the hand and forearm are rare. Between 2% and 4% of all children are born with a more or less distinct malformation of the hand. A minority of congenital deformities have a genetic cause and are hereditary, while many have environmental or unknown causes. For a better understanding knowledge of the embryological development is helpful. Based on this embryologic development disturbances can be classified and categorised into seven groups. The aim in the treatment of the malformed hand is to improve functional capability, enable an undisturbed growth and reach a socially acceptable appearance.
