This article is the second summarising the main findings and conclusions of the review of the role(s) and responsibilities of infection prevention and control nurses (IPCN) commissioned by the Department of Health (England) in 2000. It describes the activities that form the core work of IPCN, discusses the strengths and constraints of the current role and makes suggestions for the future development of IPCN roles within the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and Primary Care Trusts (PCT).
