Despite the common features in their names, foot and mouth disease has no connection with hand, foot and mouth disease. Hand, foot and mouth disease is a disease of humans, whereas foot and mouth disease almost only affects animals with hooves. Although there is documented evidence of farmers acquiring foot and mouth disease from animals, this is an extremely rare occurrence, even in those countries where foot and mouth disease is endemic.
