Abstract

The papers in this special edition were drawn from the 10th IMAV Conference and Competition held at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, in November 2018. IMAV 2018 drew teams and authors from Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Poland, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States of America and the Netherlands. It followed a strong tradition of prior events held in China, France, Germany and the Netherlands, being both an academic conference and competition, with some of the papers describing the hardware and software used in the competing micro air vehicles.
All abstracts for IMAV 2018 were reviewed by the IMAV Organising Committee and suitable abstracts were invited to proceed with a full paper (with associated presentations) at the IMAV 2018 Conference. Following the conference, a further review process took place by the IMAV International Committee and the “best-of-the-best” papers were selected for this special edition of the journal. The papers selected cover a number of advancements in conventional and unconventional rotary-wing vehicles in addition to flapping-wing micro air vehicles inspired by natures flyers.
We would like to thank all the contributing authors and members of the IMAV committees for their hard work in helping to make both IMAV 2018 and this special edition so successful and hope you find the papers herein both interesting and a useful contribution to the body of knowledge reflecting the state of the art in the rapidly growing area of micro aviation and sensing.
