Abstract
The 2024 Summer Paralympic Games reignited public interest in disability sport. However, for many disabled athletes, training and competition represent an ongoing commitment. These individuals may depend on their GP for guidance to support their training and overall well-being. A comprehensive understanding of the health needs of disabled athletes is essential for their GPs, given the complex interplay between physical, psychological and social factors. Whilst participation in sport offers substantial benefits, disabled athletes face many challenges from condition-specific complications to adaptive equipment or prosthesis related problems, which require tailored management. GPs play a vital role in the holistic care of this population, encompassing injury prevention, rehabilitation, coordinating additional support services and managing co-morbidities. Through active engagement and multidisciplinary team (MDT) collaboration, GPs can promote equality in healthcare and support disabled athletes in achieving their sporting goals whilst maintaining health through empathetic and patient-centred care.
