Abstract
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (PoTS) is a disabling autonomic disorder characterised by tachycardia on standing with symptoms of orthostatic intolerance. It may present with syncope. The syndrome affects female: male patients in a ratio of 4:1 and is more commonly present in younger patients aged 15–45 years. The term ‘PoTS’ was first coined in 1993 and used to describe a syndrome that may be idiopathic, triggered by viruses, or associated with neurodivergent and hypermobility conditions. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased interest and research on the topic, as PoTS features are not uncommon in patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome.
