Abstract
Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) is one of the most common presenting complaints to primary care during pregnancy. Although often referred to as ‘morning sickness’ symptoms may be present at any time of the day. Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is the most severe presentation of NVP and can lead to hospitalisation due to dehydration and other metabolic complications. HG can lead to psychological and socioeconomic difficulties in those affected, and there also may be more long term sequalae for the developing foetus. This article aims to highlight the issues to consider when managing patients presenting with NVP and HG in primary care.
