Abstract
Domestic violence and abuse (DVA) impacts individuals regardless of age, culture, gender, sexuality or socioeconomic background. Although DVA, by its nature, is often ‘hidden in society’, victims and survivors will often present to general practice with health concerns. Early identification in primary care with onward referral to specialist support can significantly improve outcomes for victims and their families. This article aims to help clinicians consider when and how to ask about DVA and how to safely support patients to access specialist support.
