Abstract
Neuropathic pain, caused by a range of lesions and diseases of the somatosensory system, can be particularly problematic to diagnose and treat. It is a common disorder, causing significant personal and societal burden. Diagnosis is mainly based on history and clinical examination but it can often go unrecognised. Treatment modalities include pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies and a shared plan should be agreed with patients in order to maximise positive outcomes. This article aims to improve understanding of neuropathic pain, describe common presentations seen in primary care, and outline recommended treatments.
