Abstract
Patients with skin conditions, including male genital dermatoses, commonly present to their GP. They range from localised problems in the genital area to being part of a more generalised skin disorder. Penile dermatoses frequently affect men’s physical and psychological wellbeing, with a deleterious effect on sexual function. They are usually benign, but can be premalignant and associated with a risk of penile cancer. Although rare, penile cancer has a high morbidity and mortality rate. This article reviews the clinical features of the important penile dermatoses for GPs, provides guidance on how to differentiate between benign and malignant dermatoses, advises on treatment options, and defines criteria for secondary care referral.
