Abstract
The burden of chronic disease continues to increase, with poor nutrition being a major contributor to this trend. Despite the availability of relevant literature, current dietary trends in the UK do not follow recommended guidance, and there are large inequalities in nutrition patterns and consequent ill-health. GPs are in an important position to provide patients with evidence-based advice and empower them to make better lifestyle choices, such as those around diet, to remain healthy and prevent disease. This article looks at current patterns of adult nutrition in the UK, the benefits of improving nutrition habits, and methods to overcome barriers to achieving these outcomes, such as employing health promotion models and working in partnership with local and national organisations.
