Abstract
Mental health problems are a common presenting complaint in general practice. Ninety percent of patients with mental health conditions are managed in primary care and more than a third of general practice consultations are linked to mental health conditions. Despite short consultation times, the GP can play a key role in helping people with mental health problems by communicating effectively and liaising with appropriate voluntary and community sector organisations. This article aims to discuss techniques that the GP can use to engage with people with mental health problems and prevent further morbidity and mortality.
