Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally and according to the World Health Organization it will remain so for the foreseeable future. CVD also causes considerable morbidity within the UK and carries significant economic consequences, costing £9 billion in 2009 alone. Consequently, there is a considerable need to reduce the burden of CVD in terms of mortality, morbidity and economic costs for the NHS. Prevention and management of CVD represents a significant proportion of the workload in primary care: estimating, managing and monitoring cardiovascular risk appropriately and effectively is a key skill for GPs and practice teams.
