There are currently 800 000 people in the UK with dementia, two-thirds of whom live in the community supported by family carers. As the number of people with dementia is expected to double, and costs of care treble, in the next 30 years, carers of people with dementia should be recognised as a vital resource to society and the economy. Carers suffer adverse physical, psychological, financial and social consequences due to their role. GPs are well placed to identify and assess carers, and refer them to relevant health, social and voluntary sector services if needed. The aim of this article is to summarise the current needs of carers of people with dementia and explore how GPs can conduct a holistic and comprehensive assessment.
