The term urticaria refers to a vascular reaction of the upper dermis marked by the transient appearance of slightly elevated patches (weals), that are redder or paler than the surrounding skin and often accompanied by severe itching. It is commonly referred to as hives, or nettle rash (the word urticarial comes from the Latin, urticus, meaning nettle). This article explores the causes of urticaria and its management in general practice.
