Epistaxis, or nosebleed, is a common phenomenon. It is usually self-limiting, of limited clinical significance and can often be managed in the primary care setting. However, it may also be the first presentation of more serious head and neck pathology and in some patients may lead to more significant clinical sequelae. GPs should have an understanding of the management of acute and recurrent epistaxis, and need to be able to identify aetiological factors and complications. Careful assessment and prompt intervention is required in all patients to avoid more serious outcomes.
