Abstract

Professor Krystyna Kotełko and her contribution to the study of Proteus endotoxin
Innate Immunity 24(3), 2018
Innate Immunity is an international Open Access Journal that publishes reviews and full papers, all in the area innate immunity including microbe-derived molecular patterns like LPS (endotoxin), relevant cells and their receptors, and signaling pathways. However, as an exciting new development we now begin to publish a feature entitled The Discoverers of Bacterial Endotoxin, comprising various articles on outstanding endotoxin researchers and their contributions to the field. Articles will be published in irregular order.
In this issue, we open this feature with an article by Antoni Różalski (University of Łódź, Poland) on the life and scientific contributions of Krystyna Kotełko, who worked as a microbiologist at the University of Łódź. Particularly, she studied the LPS of opportunistic urinary pathogens from Proteus, which inter alii led to the development of a classification scheme of Proteus LPS chemotypes. She also started research on the chemical structure of Proteus O-specific polysaccharides and their serological specificity, and additionally investigated other virulence factors of these bacteria, e. g., hemolysin.
I thank Jack Levin for the proposal and Ernst Th Rietschel for support.
