Abstract

Editor in Chief
This edition of the Journal of the Intensive Care Society marks a new and exciting chapter in its history. You may have already noticed that there was no plastic-coated bundle of paper deposited on your doormat this month, which is because JICS has gone digital. If everything has gone to plan, you will be reading this from a PDF version of the journal, on your preferred browsing device. I realise this change will not be welcomed by everyone as many of us prefer to throw each new edition into our bag in order to read it on the bus or during a rare quiet moment at work. However, this change is a crucial component of the Intensive Care Society’s pledge to reduce its carbon footprint. If we are to hand over the planet to the next generation in a habitable state, we all need to change the way we conduct our lives, now. This means no more printed JICS. Hot on the heels of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, the society and the team at the journal are delighted to be able to provide this immediately impactful solution to thousands of copies of the journal being transported around the country each year. The carbon footprint of printing, wrapping and delivering the paper version of this journal has troubled me for many years so and I was delighted that the society wholeheartedly supported this transition to a more modern, cleaner and greener version of the journal. In addition to this PDF version of the journal, all of the published articles will continue to be available online (https://journals.sagepub.com/home/inc). The journal’s new format will also help us to slowly increase the number of editions we release per year and with that the overall number of articles we are able to publish. Which is great news for all of our authors. The editorial board’s aim over the next few years will be to continue expanding and diversifying the journal in order to provide the highest quality content for our readers and to compete with other journals in our field.
I hope you are able to adapt this new way of reading the journal; future generations will thank us for doing this.
