Abstract
A 51-year-old man developed rhabdomyolysis and multiple organ failure following infection with Salmonella lohbruegge. This species was resistant to ciprofloxacin. After the patient was bacteria free, he continued to have symptoms due to adhesions and strictures until he had a defunctionning ileostomy performed surgically. According to the national reference laboratory, only two such cases have been isolated in the UK since 2004 in addition to this one. Since 1991, 12 human cases and five non-human cases involving snakes, lizards, shrimps and a chicken have been reported.
