Abstract

This article considers the phenomenon of diffusion of responsibility and its relevance to patient safety during anaesthetic emergencies and to what, if anything, the United Kingdoms’ healthcare professions need to do to minimise its detrimental effect upon patient safety. The factors that influence the occurrence of diffusion of responsibility are complex and multifactorial, with no simplistic solution. Whilst research on the issue exists, most relates to disciplines other than healthcare, such as aviation. Further research specific to healthcare and anaesthetic emergencies is needed to inform practice. In addition, a systemic change within the healthcare system will be vital in increasing recognition and working towards minimising its occurrence, so that patient safety remains central to the care we provide.
