Abstract
I first joined the National Association of Theatre Nurses (NATN) in 1974, which must make me nearly as old as the 50th anniversary you are commemorating this year! The previous year I had successfully completed the English National Board (ENB) course in Operating Theatre (OT) Technique at St. George's Hospital SW1, and would soon be appointed the youngest OT sister at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske. From 1980 to 1985 I served a Short Service Commission in Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service (QARNNS), as a direct result of answering an advertisement in the then printed NATN journal. So, it could be said, I owe a great deal to the forebears of AfPP! It was, therefore, both a surprise and privilege to be invited by one of your Trustees, Adrian Jones, to write this article for the fiftieth anniversary of our association, covering the role of Her Majesty's Hospital Ship Uganda during the Falklands War, fought between Britain and Argentina in 1982.
