Abstract
I think it is true to say that most of us in healthcare regard blood transfusion as just a routine, although very important, part of the care of patients undergoing major surgery. Yet behind that container of blood dripping into your patient lies a long and fascinating story of the endeavours of some brilliant and very determined pioneers.
