Since the first laparoscopic cholecystectomies were performed by Muhe in 1986 and Mouret in 1987, minimal access surgery has been widely accepted and applied to many procedures. By the end of the 1990s, surgical robots had emerged in operating theatres around the world. This technology has the potential to revolutionise minimal access surgery.
