Abstract
This study supports other studies which identify the need for high quality research into the hazards within the operating theatre and the benefits of wearing face masks. Studies are required which determine the effect of face masks in reducing postoperative wound infection. The findings of the Cochrane Review of surgical face masks found it unclear whether they resulted in any harm or benefit for patients undergoing clean surgery (Lipp & Edwards 2003). Studies are also required to determine the effect of face masks in protecting staff from potential hazards such as surgical smoke. As yet, no studies have shown how much, if any, smoke is inhaled by the surgical team and what effect, if any, this has on them.
