In September 2003 the Perioperative Care Collaborative published a position statement on the role of the first assistant which aimed to inform practitioners undertaking the role of the associated risks. In this article Linda Bazeley and Stuart Chambers explain how their Trust took a positive approach to highlighting these risks and taking steps to deal with the problem.
