Abstract
James Wright, now a qualified ODP, wrote this article while a trainee. He shares with us the history of pulse oximetry. This article in our student series describes the theoretical knowledge behind pulse oximetry and highlights its value in safely monitoring patients both pre- and postoperatively, as well as the need for proper daily calibration. He also describes the associated problems with movements of patients. He concludes that ‘pulse oximetry is one of the greatest advances in anaesthetic safety’.
