There has been much discussion in operating theatre corridors and literature (Beesley 2002) about this apparently new breed of practitioner. What is the difference between a First Assistant and a Surgical Assistant? Which term incorporates a laparoscopic nurse specialist? Perhaps more appropriately: Why is there such lack of clarity? How does it benefit the patient? This article attempts to unravel some of the issues underlying these questions.
