Abstract
The first article in this series looked at the value of research in nursing. This second article explains what nursing research is, and provides a list of steps to carry out research. There is, unfortunately, a great deal of anxiety associated with the word ‘research’, for many nurses. Over recent years, government and trust managers have placed more and more emphasis on developing a research culture in nursing. The anxiety is caused mainly by a general lack of understanding about the subject. Also, frankly, there can be at times a feeling of exclusivity for research that is cultivated by some academics and researchers. Research, as outlined in part one of this series (Bassett & Bassett 2003), however, is something that we all need to incorporate into our practice.
