A recent opportunity to visit Porto, in Portugal, allowed Allyson Lipp to observe operating department nursing in that city. In this article, Allyson explains the background to her visit, identifies some of the practices observed and compares the operating department she visited in Portugal, and nursing in that country, with their counterparts in the UK.
