In this article, Judith Tanner proposes that it is time to address the premise that first assistant activities constitute an extended role and to explore whether the tasks undertaken are extended skills requiring additional training and separate contracts. This article is particularly timely, as the two NATN documents Role of the Nurse as First Assistant (1993) and Nurse as Surgeon's Assistant (1994) are being reviewed and updated this year.
