Development of a questionnaire to determine professionals' attitudes to type 2 diabetes

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a valid and reliable questionnaire to measure primary health care professionals' (PHCP) views and perceptions of type 2 diabetes care. Management of type 2 diabetes within the UK is moving from secondary to primary led care. A need was identified to develop a tool to measure PHCP' views and perceptions of diabetes as studies have shown that these can have an impact on patient outcomes. There were four main stages in the development of the questionnaire that has used rare methodology. The first was an in-depth literature review of research databases, nationally recognized standards and professional literature. From this, criteria for the questionnaire were developed.The second stage involved a consultation with a national panel of diabetes experts. This utilized the nominal group technique consensus approach to determine ranked criteria. A sample of PHCP was interviewed on a one-to-one basis using the `talk through' technique for the third stage and was invited to make in-depth comments on each of the questions. The questionnaire was finally piloted with different professional groups working in community care. The developed questionnaire was used in a study evaluating the impact of the Glasgow Diabetes Project.
