The Case for Village Communities for Adults with Learning Disabilities: An Exploration of the Concept

Abstract

Underpinning the concept of ‘village communities’ for adults with learning disabilities is a range of assumptions about the nature of community. This paper seeks to challenge some of these assumptions and to question the wisdom of employing a concept of doubtful validity and utility. Some of the principal concerns of those opposed to the concept of ‘village communities’ are identified and discussed. Possible ways in which these concerns can be positively addressed are outlined.
