Abstract
Ian Finlay is a member of the Scottish School of Further Education at the faculty of Education of the University of strathclyde. In this paper he examines whether appraisal is compatible with the professional status of teachers. In doing so, he locates this issue within the wider debate on what constitutes proper relationships between managers and professionals in organisations which are made up mainly of such professionals. He argues that teachers and teacher-managers should be responsible for their performance to fellow professionals, that is to other teachers and teacher-managers, and suggests that appraisal can Provide a context of communication within which this can be enabled.
