Abstract
In this article, John Williamson . and his colleagues from the School Education of the University of Newcastle follow up on their work reported in this journal in Williamson and Fitz-Gibbon (1990). This focused in the impact on secondary school nglish departments of a performance indicator project known as COMBSE. since then COMBSE has grown into another, ALIS (A Level Information s ystem), and this article explores be extent to which the limitations COMBSE have been overcome ?ALIS.
