Abstract
Over the last few years , teachers in England and Wales have discovered the meaning of 'innovation overload'. The introduction of teacher appraisal in all state schools from 1992 represents one of these innovations. In his paper, Tom Hinds, an experienced educationalist, considers the contribution which governors can make. He stresses that this is not meant to be just another academic paper: Rather it offers a range of personal points. He takes as his premise that teaching is a very exposed, personal activity and argues that the attitudes and behaviours of governors in and around the appraisal of staff is almost entirely a matter of a relationship. In working these ideas out he examines six possible areas in which governors might claim to have something to do with staff appraisal.
