Abstract
Collegiate Recreation Centers offer various programs including intramural sports, yet injury rates and characteristics are not well established in the current literature. The aim of this study was to describe the injury rates and characteristics for intramural sport programming. Injury rates per 1,000 exposures and injury frequencies were analyzed for each intramural sport league, academic year, injury type, injured body region, and injured body part. There were 490 documented injury reports and 216,262 exposures resulting in 2.27 injuries per 1,000 athlete exposures. Musculoskeletal injuries (78.2%) were the most common injury type and the lower extremity (56.5%) was the most commonly injured body region. These results suggest the need for additional medical providers such as athletic trainers, specific risk management personnel for sport programs, and consistent risk management training and documentation procedures for both injury reporting and participant exposure tracking.
