Abstract
This case explores the volatile circumstances that arise when a novice leader confronts possible litigation resulting from the poor judgment of an insecure teacher and the instigation of an unwise coach. It also examines the way educators’ perceptions of different studentsespecially students of color and students from unconventional backgrounds influence their behavior toward those students. In addition, the case provides opportunities to consider the role that values and beliefs play in shaping apparently insignificant but nevertheless influential educational decisions. This case can be used in classes that consider personnel management, instructional leadership, and diversity issues.
