Islet cell tumors of the pancreas are uncommon, but may be small in size. Laparoscopic approaches are appropriate if the tumor is believed to be benign (eg, insulinoma) or if it is located in the body or tail of the pancreas. Enucleation of insulinoma and left-sided pancreatectomy are feasible laparoscopic procedures but demand a good camera system and a range of retractors. Experience is limited, but provisional results suggest that laparoscopic surgery is valuable in the management of suitable patients.
