Pituitary tumors are uncommon. More than 90% will be amenable to transsphenoidal surgery. The remainder will require transcranial surgery alone or as an additional procedure. In expert hands, transsphenoidal surgery is minimally invasive and safe. Endoscopic transnasal transsphenoidal techniques to excise pituitary tumors are being developed but require further evaluation before being introduced into routine clinical practise.
