Diagnostic laparoscopy with biopsy has been practiced since the early 1900s. Recent technological advances have made this an attractive approach in the treatment of patients for whom conventional noninvasive methods of diagnosis prove unsuccessful. This article discusses the indications, methodology, pitfalls, and results of diagnostic laparoscopy with biopsy for the diagnosis or staging of various conditions of the abdomen.
