Abstract
Asbestos-containing materials have been commonly used in the past and they embody the construction ideals of their time, both technically and in the images created for consumers. Because the materials cannot be repaired or restored, they are exceptional compared to other façade materials. This makes their valuation, protection, and conservation challenging. Because the cultural-historical significance and future of asbestos containing façade materials have not been studied widely in Finland, I address this gap in the field with my research. I approach the topic as a broader phenomenon through the challenges related to the valuation and protection of modern built heritage. I focus on the cultural-historical significance of asbestos-containing façade materials and the implications of their removal, also recognizing the aspect of asbestos as difficult heritage. To enhance understanding, a thematic inventory is presented as a research method.
