Abstract

This photograph, taken in 2012, shows a person with left hemiplegia from stroke practicing ambulation at his home in the African country of Niger. With no rehabilitation services available, he intuitively realized the importance of repetitive movement. With his son’s help, they fashioned a set of quasi-parallel bars, which he had never seen, out of 2 clotheslines tightly anchored to trees and he used these to repeatedly walk back and forth in his yard to gain more mobility.
We must not forsake the value of simplicity in effort and tenacity in spirit.
