Douglas Katz, MD, is the ASNR and WFNR member honored for his outstanding contributions to neurorehabilitation. Dr Katz is the medical director of the Brain Injury Programs at the Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital, Braintree, Massachusetts. He is also an associate professor of neurology at Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts.
Braintree Rehabilitation is recognized for its educational programs. Dr Katz has served as chair of the Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital Annual Neuroreha-bilitation Conference since 1988. He is currently director of medical education and is a dedicated educator in the field of neurorehabilitation. In addition to being the chair of the yearly conferences, he is the neurorehabilitation fellowship director for the Braintree Program and Boston University and educates Boston University medical students as well as neurology residents. As a committed lecturer on the topic of traumatic brain injury (TBI), Dr Katz has been invited to speak at more than 80 neurorehabilitation presentations.
Dr Katz is an ardent advocate for TBI. He served on the board of directors of the Brain Injury Association of America from 1998 to 2004. He was lead author of a white paper on cognitive rehabilitation for the Brain Injury Association of America in 2006. The awards he has received include the prestigious Sheldon Berrol Clinical Services Award from the Brain Injury Association of America. Dr Katz served on the advisory board of the Clinical Trials Network for TBI of the NICHD branch of the National Institutes of Health from 2002 to 2009. He was also a member of the scientific advisory board for the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center from 2002 to 2005.
Dr Katz is actively engaged in the neurorehabilitation community and is a respected leader. He is currently vice president, American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, and a member of the board of governors. He served on the board of directors of the American Society of Neurorehabilitation from 2003 to 2009. He also served as chair of the Section on Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair of the American Academy of Neurology from 2002 to 2004. He is currently chair of the ASNR and AAN Neurorehabilitation Section Committee for UCNS subspecialty certification. He is involved in 5 neurorehabilitation journal editorial boards.
In addition to advocacy, teaching, and community involvement, Dr Katz is collaborating on a number of research projects involving patients with disorders of consciousness or examining cognitive outcome following TBI. Dr Katz’s scholarship of peer-reviewed publications includes more than 40 published articles. In addition to authoring a number of book chapters on brain injury, he has coedited 2 books, one on clinical neurorehabilitation and a comprehensive text on brain injury, soon to be released in its second edition.
The neurorehabilitation community is fortunate to have an outstanding advocate, leader, and educator in Dr Doug Katz. He should continue to make exceptional contributions to advance the field of neurorehabilitation.
