Carolee J. Winstein, PhD, PT, FAPTA, is the American Society of Neurorehabilitation (ASNR) and World Federation for Neurorehabilitation (WFNR) member honored for her outstanding contributions to neurorehabilitation research. Professor Winstein is the director of the Motor Behavior and Neurorehabilitation Laboratory at the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, California. She is a professor of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy at USC and holds a joint appointment as an associate professor in the Department of Neurology at the Keck School of Medicine at USC.
Professor Winstein is a talented and highly respected researcher in neurorehabilitation. She runs an interdisciplinary research program focused on understanding the control, rehabilitation, and recovery of goal-directed actions that emerge from a dynamic brain behavior system in brain-damaged conditions. With National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, she and her team are leading a phase III randomized controlled trial, the ICARE (Interdisciplinary Comprehensive Arm Recovery Evaluation) stroke initiative, to improve outpatient therapy for arm paresis after stroke, now in its forth year and with nearly half the target recruitment completed. With funding from the Foundation for Physical Therapy, she led the first Physical Therapy Clinical Research Network, PTClinResNet, that supported clinical research on the effectiveness of task-specific/muscle-specific training to enhance muscle performance and functional activities across 4 disability groups including adult spinal cord injury, children with cerebral palsy, adult stroke, and low back pain. Recently, with National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR)/Department of Education (DoE) funding, she and her colleagues at USC and Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Hospital established a Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) to study the challenges of growing older with and into disabilities and the positive effects that new technologies can have on independence, health, and quality of life. She is a co-investigator on 3 other NIH grants and a co-investigator for an American Heart Association Scientist Development Grant, The Mirror Neuron System, with her colleague Lisa Aziz-Zadeh at USC. Dr Winstein’s research to date has yielded over 70 peer-reviewed publications, many of which are with graduate students and postdoctoral scholars whom she has mentored in her laboratory. More recent publications include the following:
Chen S, Wolf SL, Zhang Q, Thompson PA, Winstein C. The minimal detectable change of the actual amount of use test and the motor activity log: the EXCITE trial. Neurorehabil Neural Repair. In press.
Wade E, Winstein C. Virtual reality and robotics for stroke rehabilitation: where do we go from here? Top Stroke Rehabil. 2011;18(6):685-700.
An exceptional researcher is recognized for her superb efforts with a number of awards. Just a few of the awards she received include the Anne Shumway-Cook Lecture Award: Translating Neurorehabilitation Research into Practice (American Physical Therapy Association 2012 [APTA]; the 40th Mary McMillan Lecture Award 2009 (APTA); and the 2006 Marion Williams Award for Research in Physical Therapy (APTA).
Professor Winstein is an active member of the neurorehabilitation community. She is a current member of the ASNR Board of Directors. She also serves on the Advisory Board of the NIDRR Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC), Machines Assisting Recovery from Stroke (MARS), Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), Chicago, Illinois. From 2005 until 2009, she served on the NIH National Advisory Board on Medical Rehabilitation Research (NABMRR).
The neurorehabilitation community is fortunate to have Dr Winstein engaged in exceptional research efforts and in training junior researchers in neurorehabilitation. Her contributions considerably advance knowledge in the neuroscience of neurorehabilitation.
