Professor John Olver is the World Federation for Neurorehabilitation (WFNR) and American Society of Neurorehabilitation (ASNR) member honored for his contributions to neurorehabilitation. Dr Olver is a professor of rehabilitation medicine at Epworth Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. He is also the Victor Smorgon Chair of Rehabilitation Medicine at Epworth Healthcare and Monash University.
Of importance to the WFNR, Professor Olver is an active member of the council of the WFNR since 2000. He is the convener of the 2012 WFNR Scientific Conference Committee for the meeting to be held in Melbourne, Australia. Professor Olver is also a member of the president’s cabinet for the International Society for Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, vice president of the Asia-Oceania Society of Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine since 2007, and an active member of the International Brain Injury Association.
Professor Olver has BS, MB, and MD degrees from the University of Melbourne. He is a fellow of the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine and fellow of the Australian College of Rehabilitation Medicine. He is a productive researcher in addition to his teaching and administrative responsibilities. His current academic interest focuses on outcomes following traumatic brain injury. He is conducting ongoing prospective research. A recent article in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, first published online this year, reflects this research focus (http://jnnp.bmj.com/content/early/2011/01/08/jnnp.2010.210021.abstract?eaf) and relates brain injury variables to likelihood of achieving employment.
Professor Olver is the recipient of numerous awards for his achievements: Centenary of Federation Medal from the Governor General of Australia for his services toward road safety in 2002, Rotary Club of Richmond Vocational Plaque in 2001, Rotary Club of Melbourne Vocational Plaque in 1998, and Victorian Association of Occupational Therapist Award in 1995.
The WFNR and ASNR are fortunate to have an individual accomplished and engaged in neurorehabilitation devoting his energies to the 2012 WFNR meeting in Melbourne, Australia. Undoubtedly, the conference should be a superb event.
