Abstract

Member News
Congratulations to Professor Jane Burridge, the American Society of Neurorehabilitation and World Federation for Neurorehabilitation member recognized for her outstanding contributions to neurorehabilitation research. Dr Burridge is professor of restorative neuroscience at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. Her responsibilities include heading the Rehabilitation and Health Technologies (RHT) Research Group in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
RHT is an interdisciplinary research group bringing together academics, researchers, and graduate students from medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, podiatry, speech therapy, engineering, and psychology. The work of the group spans user-centered development and evaluation of technologies and understanding mechanisms of normal, impaired, and recovering movement. Dr Burridge’s own research reflects this interdisciplinary approach as evidenced by her recent publication in Current Opinion in Neurology (2010;23(6):671-677), reflecting the use of microstimulators for individuals following strokes. Dr Burridge is quite an active educator; she notes involvement with 10 PhD students and leads a master’s course in sensory motor interaction in neurorehabilitation, which teaches the neurophysiological and motor learning principles that underpin current neurorehabilitation practice.
Dr Burridge’s research reflects her interdisciplinary commitment and focuses on 3 areas: (a) functional electrical stimulation (FES), (b) motor control and recovery, and (c) rehabilitation technologies, especially the use of iterative learning control in rehabilitation robotics. Dr Burridge’s present research efforts are well funded. Her current funding support is approximately £2.7 million. Her research efforts have yielded more than 72 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
In addition to her outstanding research and educational endeavors, Dr Burridge is a leader in the neurorehabilitation community. She is president of the International Functional Electrical Stimulation Society. She is also on the editorial boards of Neuromodulation: Technology at the Neural Interface, the Journal of Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair (FES Section Editor), and the International Journal of Research in Rehabilitation.
Dr Burridge is an exceptional member of the neurorehabilitation community. She continues to advance the scientific progress of restorative neuroscience. What is even more incredible is the fact that with all her accomplishments, she continues to pursue her love of music. Dr Burridge is certainly an individual with a wonderful balance of research, academics, and humanity. She is a unique and gifted individual to be treasured for her contributions.
