Alexander Dromerick, MD, is definitely deserving of recognition by the American Society of Neurorehabilitation and the World Federation for Neurorehabilitation as a professional who contributes both outstanding research and clinical care. Dr Dromerick is associate medical director and director of stroke research at the National Rehabilitation Hospital. He is also professor of rehabilitation medicine and neurology and vice chair of rehabilitation medicine at Georgetown School of Medicine in Washington, DC, as well as chief of rehabilitation at Georgetown University Hospital.
Dr Dromerick, with his many clinical responsibilities, has continued to receive research support for the past 16 years. He is involved in poststroke comprehensive research as well as prosthesis research for amputees. Dr Dromerick recently published an important stroke outcome study (VECTORS) regarding the early use of constraint therapy with recovering stroke patients in Neurology (2009;73(3):195-201). Dr Dromerick’s stroke research efforts were recently highlighted during his acceptance speech for the Kenneth Viste Award for Neurorehabilitation at the American Society for Neurorehabilitation/American Congress for Rehabilitation Medicine in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, October 2010.
In keeping with his excellence in the field of neurorehabilitation as well as his outstanding teaching ability, Dr Dromerick has received numerous awards, including the Kenneth Viste Award for Neurorehabilitation, 2010; Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program Teaching Award, Georgetown University/National Rehabilitation Hospital, 2007; Clinical Teacher of the Year, Medical School Class of 2006, Washington University, 2006; Neurology Residency Program Teacher of the Year, Washington University (Eliason Teaching Award), 2001; Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program Teacher of the Year, Washington University, 2000; and the “Award for Humaneness in Medicine,” Philadelphia County Medical Society, 1990.
Dr Dromerick is an exemplary leader in the field of neurorehabilitation. His many activities include the following: Chair, Function, Integration and Rehabilitation Sciences Panel, NIH/NICHD/NCMRR, 2008 and 2009; Rehabilitation Chair, American Heart Association International Stroke Conference Program Committee, 2007 to 2010; and two terms on the board of directors of the American Society of Neurorehabilitation.
The field of neurorehabilitation is fortunate to have exemplary contributions from Dr Dromerick. He should continue to advance our knowledge base and our ability to care for our patients.
