Congratulations to Anna Barrett, MD, MA, honored as the American Society of Neurorehabilitation (ASNR) and World Federation for Neurorehabilitation (WFNR) outstanding member. Dr Barrett’s vital role at Kessler Institute of Rehabilitation is stroke program leadership. She is also director of Stroke Rehabilitation Research at the affiliated Kessler Foundation and a professor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), New Jersey Medical School. She holds an additional appointment in the UMDNJ Department of Neurology and Neurosciences. Dr Barrett is an outstanding physician and researcher with numerous awards recognizing her abilities. The awards include the following: Early Career Award, International Neuropsychological Society (2008); Norman Geschwind Prize, American Academy of Neurology Society for Behavioral and Cognitive Neurology (2007); Ohio State University Harold Brenner Pepinsky Early Career Award in Neurobehavioral Science, honoring scholars early in their career for outstanding research in the fields of neurobehavior, cognitive neuroscience, neuropsychiatry, neuropsychology, neurology, psychiatry, or related fields (2004); and the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine Samuel Hinkle Society Outstanding Junior Investigator award—the highest honor conferred on junior faculty researchers in the basic or clinical sciences (2003).
Dr Barrett’s research focus is cognitive and behavioral research on attention and awareness in the disordered brain. One particular area of interest is spatial cognition. Dr Barrett is supported by National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke funding. Her productivity as a researcher is reflected in 63 peer-reviewed publications. Dr Barrett is also an active member of the ASNR. She has served on the Board of Directors of the ASNR since 2005 and is the current president-elect. Dr Barrett helped educate numerous postdoctoral fellows and resident trainees and currently has a K24 Midcareer Investigator Award from the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research supporting her mentoring activities. She is a productive lecturer with numerous talks on cognitive neurorehabilitation topics. Dr Barrett is an extraordinary and exceptionally talented leader in neurorehabilitation. The neurorehabilitation community is fortunate to garner the benefits of her outstanding work reflected in her contributions to clinical care, research excellence, leadership, and educational service.
