Abstract
Recently, the world has witnessed significant crises, resulting in widespread poverty, unemployment, disease, displacement, inequality, and injustice. These crises have drawn considerable attention to zakat, compulsory almsgiving in Islam, and its applications in peacebuilding activities. This article explores the application of the eight zakat categories to peacebuilding activities and the willingness of Qatari people to allocate their zakat funds towards such initiatives. The study employs mixed methods, including a survey with 153 participants in Qatar and semi-structured interviews with 19 stakeholders and survey participants. The results indicate that the eight categories of zakat are divided between desired and controversial categories. Contributions can be classified into acceptable and contested projects. Given the significance of zakat, there is an urgent need to assess all possible applications of zakat to peacebuilding projects.
