Responsibility for the overnight on-call pager can be nerve-wracking, particularly to CPE students and those who are new to chaplaincy. This reflection attempts to reframe the terror we may associate with night-time and draws on the spirituality of John of the Cross in offering encouragement to those who wish to do this work with greater openness, equanimity, or courage.
